Public Speaking Exhibitions

The COM 110 course is an introductory foundational course for public speaking skills at NC State University. It is the first course that many students take in communication. In this context, the vMLK project can be used to give beginner-level students experience with a historic speech and introduce them to the concept of being in dialogue with a text through the re-envisioning and re-enactment of a speech. Dr. Elizabeth Nelson developed this set of pedagogical tools, which the vMLK team have adapted.

Academic Year 2014-2015

Every student in Public Speaking Courses at North Carolina State University had the opportunity to experience the vMLK project as a part of the classroom experience at Hunt Library. The experience featured a Teaching and visualization Walk In experience, the Historical Archives experience, and a Listening experience.

Academic Year 2015-2016

The Public Speaking course is an introductory foundational course for students at NC State University. In the 2015-2016 academic year, students were able to go through the collective sound experience in the Teaching and Visualization Lab, the historical experience through the timeline, and the listening experience online.

Academic Year 2016-2017

In the Public Speaking courses, the vMLK project was used to give beginner-level students experience with a historic speech and introduce them to the concept of being in dialogue with a text through the re-envisioning and re-enactment of a speech. This academic year featured the historical experience through project documentaries in the Ipearl Theatre at Hunt Library as well as the collective sound experience in the Teaching and Visualization Lab.

Academic Year 2017-2018

The Public Speaking Courses incorporated the vMLK project as a part of each course schedule. The students were showed the historical listening experiences through the website and the Virtual Reality experience in their classrooms.

Academic Year 2018-2019

Public Speaking courses incorporated the vMLK project into the curriculum designed by Dr. Elizabeth Nelson. The curriculum featured the collective sound experience in the Teaching and Visualization Lab as well as the historical experience and Virtual Reality experiences in the Creativity Studio at Hunt Library.

Academic Year 2019-2020

Public Speaking courses incorporated the vMLK project into the curriculum. The curriculum featured the collective sound experience in the Teaching and Visualization Lab as well as the historical experience and Virtual Reality experiences in the Creativity Studio at Hunt Library. Planning for virtual exhibitions began in Spring 2020.

Academic Year 2020-2021

Public Speaking courses added new virtual exhibition components for online coursework due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In the future, the courses will include both an in-person and a virtual exhibition component. This makes the project accessible to instructors outside of NC State.
